The Event

The largest (and most Southerly) of the Channel Islands, Jersey is arguably the ideal destination for family cycling. Although the island is only 9 x 5 miles, it has an extensive network of rural lanes; on many of these, traffic is limited to 20mph, and bicycles have priority over motorised traffic! In the middle it is quite appreciably hilly, so even though the distances aren't huge, it's not hard to have a good work-out!

There are a number of cycle routes including a 40 mile (64km) coastal circuit of the island.

The Camp Site

Rozel Camping Park is a family run camp site in the parish of St. Martin.
There is a laundry room with token operated machines.
A 54 foot swimming pool and children's paddling pool.
An 'on-site' shop with a range of groceries, dairy produce, wines and spirits.

A snack bar with take away food.

The Island

Quite apart from the many beautiful beaches, there are lots of family friendly activities which will form the focus for each day's ride. There are plenty of inclement weather options too - although as Jersey gets significantly more hours of sunshine than the UK, hopefully these won't be needed.

As the island is small, the rides will generally be of family length - up to 30 miles a day. I will arrange a couple of longer rides over the course of the week, but it's simply not possible to provide a different 70-miler every day for the whole rally. A good excuse for the mile-eaters to relax and enjoy what Jersey has to offer.

So why the International in the Channel Islands? Well, although part of Britain, Jersey is not in the United Kingdom, and indeed is not even in the EU. It is a Crown Dependancy. Although it uses pounds and pence (British money is accepted), it issues its own currency. Likewise, the Norman influence persists in the street and place names.

Watch out for further details and booking form here and in the Tandem Club Journal later in the year.

Some places to visit

Pallot Steam, Motor and General museum Rue de Bechet, Trinity.

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (Jersey Zoo) on cycle routes1, 1b and 3a.

Maritime Museum Occupation Tapestry

Railways

For the railway buffs there are two railways in the Channel Islands. The Pallot Steam, Motor General Museum operates a steam hauled train on Thursdays.

The only other railway in the Channel Islands is on the nearby island of Alderney. The Alderney Railway runs the two miles from Braye Road Station to Mannez Station. Two ex London undergoround carriages are hauled by a Vulcan built diesel locomotive Elizabeth. There is also a 7 miniature railway at Mannez quarry.

Visitor Information

Visitors require health insurance. There is no longer a reciprocal agreement with the rest of the U.K.
Jersey has an overall speed limit of 40mph. 20 - 30 mph in urban areas and 15 mph in the 'Green Lanes'. Traffic lights do not have an amber light between red and green.

Caravans and Campervans

Visiting caravans, trailer tents and motorhomes can be driven on the roads subject to a permit, normally issued by the camp site, and are restricted to one journey to, and one journey from, the campsite and the port. Caravans must remain on the designated site for the period of the permit.Special dispensation has been given allowing motorhomes to circulate on the Island on a daily basis but MUST return to the designated campsite each night. (Drivers should be aware that many of Jersey's roads are narrow and may have limited access).
Arrangements for the Rally:

The procedure agreed with Jersey Tourism since the December Journal was printed is that you make your booking for the rally with the Tandem Club in the usual way. You will receive confirmation that a space has been reserved for your unit and you may then go ahead with booking a ferry.
