The Event
After a space of ten years the National Rally will return to Lucton School in North Herefordshire.

Lucton rally badge
Many of you may remember Lucton 2001 which took place when 444 of us were let out from the detention imposed by the foot and mouth outbreak of that year. Since then the school's fortunes have improved and so have many of the facilities. Founded in 1708 by a London vintner, John Pierrepont, as a boy's school it is now an independent mixed day and boarding school set in some of Herefordshire's most delightful countryside.

The Club will have use of all the school's facilities for the week of the rally. There is an excellent large level sports field for the campers but regretfully there will be no electricity hook-up points. The boarding house will accommodate 76 people (72 singles and 2 twin rooms). The school hall, dining room and, if required, two classrooms are available. The swimming pool has been completely rebuilt and is now covered and heated and has good changing facilities. Adjacent to the pool is a very large covered activity area. We will have access to the tennis courts and the cricket pavilion, although the latter will be used for a less energetic pursuit resuming it's role as 'The Wobbly Wheel'!

The boarding house has been much improved since 2001. The rooms, on three floors, although small (9' x 6'), are adequately furnished and full bedding will be provided. There are 5 lounge areas, a cafe area with a microwave and tea making facilities and 3 suites of toilets and showers on each floor. The alarms on the connecting doors between the boys and girls sections of the building will be disabled if TC occupants promise to behave! There will be no charge for children under 5 for any part of the rally but parents will need to provide their own sleeping arrangements in the boarding house.

There are a limited number of BB establishments in the area. There will be secure undercover parking for tandems at the school for those staying off site. There are two village shops 2-3 miles away and several good pubs with bar and restaurant menus. It may be possible to arrange deliveries of milk, bread and other items from Yarpole village shop.

There will be, as in 2001, a breakfast available for cycle campers and boarding house occupants.

Unfortunately it will not be possible to provide electricity for caravan and motorhome owners.

The week will open with a 'Welcome Evening'. There will be the usual pattern of short, medum and long rides with a free day on the Wednesday. A Velocio competition is planned and the Hill climb will take place sometime during the week. Various other activities are in the pipeline for both adults and children including the morning supervised Kids Club, Tandem Games, Cycle Jumble and possibly a Mini-Triathlon. For any member who might wish to show appropriate films or photographs there are overhead projection facilities in the school hall. The week will end in the traditional manner with a BBQ.

The Area

North Herefordshire and environs is superb cycling country for young and old alike so please put the date in your diary, on the calendar, come and join us and give a new meaning to the school motto 'Floreat Luctona'.

Herefordshire and the Welsh Marches can boast some of the best and most scenic cycling in the country. A population of only 180,000 in an area of 840 square miles means Herefordshire has plenty of room for bikes and with neighbouring Shropshire, Powys and Worcestershire not far away there's plenty to do and see.
