International Tandem Rally 2010

Echternach, Luxembourg

Saturday, 7th - Saturday, 14th August

The Event
Echternach

Echternach

The rally will take place on a family run campsite about 1km from the centre of town. Echternach is in an area known as “Little Switzerland” because of its rock formations, forests and streams. Across the border in Germany is the Rhineland-Palatinate in the Eifel region. The cycling is easy along the river valleys but a little lumpy in between although in a week's cycling Janet and Tony Prichard only had to walk one hill.

The Semaine Federale event in 2010 runs from 1st–8th August and will be in Verdun about 90 miles away - so it would be possible to do both event's.

The Town

Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg, the European Destination of Excellence in 2008. It is situated in a bend of the Sûre river (Sauer in German). A few miles south the Sûre joins the Moselle (Mosel) and enters the wine producing region. The town boasts a pedestrian area with a good choice of shops, restaurants with ‘Cactus’ and ‘Delhaize’ supermarkets not too far away. Remember to look up for the decorative shop signs. Other sites to visit are the Roman Museum, the Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Ancient Cross of Justice in the market square, the medieval city wall with its seven bastions and the Museum of Pre-history.

Rides

We are planning to have three routes of about 50, 40 and 30 miles each day heading out or returning in the same direction. On one day we shall head towards Luxembourg City. Only the 50 mile route reaches the city. There are many opportunities to extend or shorten these routes to your own requirements.

There is no set departure time. You can make up a small group or set off on your own and see who you meet up with. If you see a tandem outside a café you can be certain that they are from the rally and within a short time more people will join them. Take a packed lunch, find a café or buy something tasty from the local shops. Most of the camp sites we pass will have a small shop.

We have selected several destinations including the ancient Roman city of Trier, the pretty, small city of Vianden with its medieval chateau, the historic town of Ettelbruck, the ancient town of Larochette, the Mullerthal Valley, the capital city – Luxembourg passing Junglinster, the site of 208 Radio Luxembourg. Those of a certain age will remember “The Ovaltinies”, Michael Miles and Take your pick along with many other programmes which we listened to with its fading signal. For the small boys of any age we have discovered a ‘shop’ which has on display Harley Davidson Motorcycles and Tricycles, a Citroen Traction-Avant, a large scale model ‘live steam’ railway locomotive, model trains running on elevated tracks, kits to build model steam engines and all the machine tools to make any model you care to think of.

You can look at the current proposed routes on www.bikely.com - search for ITR 2010. These are still being worked on and have been allocated colour codes which will be replaced by the appropriate days when complete.

Alternative Accommodation

There is no on-site accommodation (apart from camping, caravans and motorhomes), alternatives are a Youth Hostel less than 1Km away, a choice of 15 Hotels and 4 converted towers in the city walls.

T Shirts

T shirts will be available for this event in all sizes from small to extra extra large.

Volunteers

We still need help to finalise the arrangements. Should you be in the area or looking for a holiday with a purpose then there are still route details to be checked. We plan another visit in May/June, possibly following on from the (Tandem Club National Rally at Ringmer 29th May-5th June), and would welcome anyone who wishes to join us. Please contact us (Tony and Janet) if you would like to help - using the email address given below.
