The Rides

1: Penzance to Lands End YHA - Part 1 of a circular ride of Western Cornwall (E)

Starting at the train station in Penzance, the route heads uphill and out of town to view Ding Dong mine. There are some off road sections here. Heading south you'll pass the ancient village of Carn Euny where you can walk amongst the foundations of ancient homesteads The ride finishes at Lands End YHA which is 6 miles from the end of England. However it's a good choice as you can camp with a fabulous sea views. Starting at the train station in Penzance, the route heads uphill and out of town to more ...

2: Lands End YHA to Portreath - Part 2 of a circular ride of Western Cornwall (E)

The hardest climb of the day is at the start as you climb through Bosavern to St Just. Joining the A3071 takes you into the pretty centre of St Just which contains everything you'll need from cafe's, hotels and a well stocked shop, Be careful as you exit as it's 1 in 6 with a left hand bend at the bottom to climb towards Botallack. Botallack is in the middle of the UNESCO heritage site of Cornish Mining. For hundreds if years, copper and latterly tin has been extracted from both land and tunnels more ...

3: Portreath to Devoran - Part 3 of a circular ride of Western Cornwall (E)

The Coast to Coast Trail closely follows the line of two historic transport routes. The early horse-worked Portreath tramroad opened in 1812. This was the first surface tramroad in Cornwall. It gave the copper mines around Scorrier and St Day a transport route to the sea at Portreath. Portreath has an amazing inland double harbor. Protected from the beach by a high sea wall, there are two in use harbours surrounded by houses. To start head to these and skirt to the right taking the path to the r more ...

4: Devoran to Coverack - Part 4 of a circular ride of Western Cornwall (E)

Head out of Devoran Quay, heading through Devoran. The entrance to the cyclepathis marked by a granite marker on the bend in the road. The track is firm, so folow this under a bridge to take a wooden bridge on the right to bear right and climb a byway where the surface is fine for narrower tyres. Descend into Perranwell to climb out the other side of the village. Continue climbing from Perranwell as the road heads to Cross the A393 to climb some more and then descends through Stithians. You'll t more ...

5: Coverack to Penzance - Part 5 of a circular ride of Western Cornwall (E)

Exitting the YHA at Coverack, the route is pretty flat as you ride through common land actively managed by Exmoor Ponies on both left and right. Onto a moderately busy B road to turn left and gradually descend a road with lovely views passing the satalitte dishes of Goonhilly on the right. Turn right and you are into an undulating lane with hedges and wild flowers (In May as we found) with the occasional short sharp climb. Just before Mullion there are good views to the right, best seen from the more ...
