Newbies. Custom tandem
Hi Everyone
Thought we would introduce ourselves as some reasonably new tandemmists from Devon.
We are both very keen mountainbikers but road riding/touring and tandems are very or were a very unknown world to us. We decided we wanted to do a big tour and last summer completed john o groats to lands end. We based the scottish section on the GB divide route with a lot of offroad. The rest tried to use cycle paths, tow paths etc. We did not want to do a conventional route or use any main roads. We ended up being on the road for 29 days and covering approx 2000 miles. We fully have the tandem bug!
We couldn't really find a tandem for our needs. It needed to carry luggage and handle some big offroad adventures. Most seemed to be either road touring or offroad without luggage.
Having seen the solo bike we would have wanted from Pi at Clandestine at the bespoked show we decided to ask him to build us a custom tandem. www.clandestine.cc It was a great experience for all of us. Pi loved building and designing and we liked researching options. We decided to very much stick to what we know offroad so it has lots of standover clearance like an MTB (this proved very useful!) 2.6" wide 27.5 wheels. We went 36 spoke from ryanbuildswheels and they have been faultless. Even fully loaded off road. Brakes were monsters from hope, we know hope stuff well but the way they coped with the tandem was very impressive, no fade even on massive descents. Not seen any other tandems quite like ours but im sure there are similar ones out there. Its great riding offroad on Dartmoor./exmoor here at home and rediscovering trails that are a bit tame on our mountain bikes but hilarious fun on this. Yes Naomi the stoker is a brave individual!
Hoping to go along to a meet/ride sometime.
Would Love to to have the route - sounds amazing. .

Hi Tony
I can email over a. gpx if you would like? Not sure if it's possible to send it directly on here!

thanks.
might be an idea for there to be a place on the forum for saving these rides - must be plenty of beautiful hidden rides that folks have discovered and could be shared.
There are plenty of free services to use for sharing smallish files, e.g. DropBox, Google Drive, etc.
Just put the file there and post a link here.
E.g. here is a link to a local ride: Oxon ride - on Google Drive.
