George Longstaff touring tandem. Condition is Used. Collection in person only.
My parents bought this tandem about 21 years ago, but almost immediately suffered health problems that meant they virtually never rode it. My wife and I borrowed it and did a couple of hundred miles or so on it a few years ago, which would certainly have at least doubled its total mileage. It is therefore in virtually mint condition aside from a couple of chips in the paintwork on the rear top tube and another by the rear bottom bracket. As the photos show the brake tracks on the wheels are completely unmarked and the (original) tyre treads are as new. This bike has covered, at most 400 miles, probably a lot less. It has been stored its whole life in a brick, waterproof garage, hence the condition.
This is a top quality touring tandem built by George Longstaff (who now only build custom-made tandems, I believe, although this was a stock size of theirs when purchased), made from quality Reynolds 531 tubing throughout.
For obvious reasons it is cash on collection only due to size/weight etc, from Swansea, South Wales.
Frame size: Front 21", rear 20" measured from bottom bracket centre to top of seat tubes. Parents were c. 5'8" and 5'4", so would suit pair of similar height, although would adjust to accommodate taller/shorter riders - purchaser to satisfy themselves of this. Front handlebars have a 'quill' stem. Rears are attached to front seat tube by aluminium bracket, a replacement for which would be cheap and easy to accommodate shorter reach for rear rider.
Wheels: 48 spoke f/r, Mavic rims on top quality Hope hubs. Bomb proof. Tyre size 28/622 (27").
Chainset: Triple 54/44/28 Shimano, with Shimano non-drive side crank-connector set. Front bottom bracket is eccentric.
Cassette: 7 Speed 13 - 30
Front derailleur: Shimano STX/RC
Rear derailleur: Shimano Deore LX
Shimano Ultegra style bar-end gear shifters (rear gears indexed).
Brakes: Pilot controls front and rear cantilevers. Stoker controls a rear side-pull caliper and the rear drum drag brake.
Fitted and supplied with cage pedals with toe-straps and both saddles (non-original). Rear pannier rack also supplied, and front fork has braze-ons for front rack.
Any questions or further photographs needed, just ask.
