WEDNESDAY EVENING At 17:30 tandem games. Head for the marquee and
Wednesday continued. Head to the Marquee and Clem will come up with various games involving tandems. In the marquee from 19:30 Show us you Tandem, how was it built, where have you been, who’s idea was it, maybe even talk technical. Talking of that if you have anything to sell/ give away then bring it along. I’ll also put out an OS map with the Velocio points so you can plan the next day

Lastly, rides the Tandem Club database is your friend. Open the map via any ride. Hit S, select none, then misc/velocio to reveal black icons at the locations of the clues. The target circle below S is a position marker, shows where you are. You could just select Velocio as above, create a marker and the small red circle homes in on the clue, much like the Alien film
Rides markers will be switched just before 08:00
For the Velocio the TC Rides system might help as it will show a list of the Velocio places as a list or on a map with the questions on a mobile phone.

The map will track where you are (if you allow it to access your position). The Velocio Places are shown as a black shield which you can click on to get the questions.
You can use the "S" button to select just the "misc/velocio" places to make it easier to see where they are. The location I con can be toggled to turn off the tracking of your position and the +- buttons can zoom the map.
The place icons can appear a bit later if mobile Internet is slow and a page refresh can help.

Congratulations to Richard and Hilary Abbott who won Velocio. Stuart and Jackie Hibbard along with Eugene and Sally Kertzman came a very creditable second. The walking clues were ruled by the Dutch, well done Jan and Anja
Sorry we missed the hog roast. Roger met a friend in Somerton he had not seen for 20 years and we had meal out with them, Tandem power bringing people together in a loverly way.

HOG ROAST ready maybe 18:40 by the marquee. Please hog first then vegetarian at 18:55ish as this helps the cooking process. There is gluten breadcrumbs in the vegetarian burgers, we do have gluten free buns if required
SATURDAY RIDE. All rides head south. All go through Merriott which makes a good cafe stop. I haven’t warned them but it’s a good stop. The short then swings north to Barrington Court, the National Trust property. The medium takes in the Chard to Ilminster Cycleway that has a good surface. The long goes further south, the cafe at the shop at the south is open until 13:00 (Thorncombe) after that return north to meet the other routes we
SATURDAY NIGHT cider tasting and tasting notes. Probably 6 to guess the type from the description. There will also be some apple juices and some cheese available. Will be in the marquee at 19:00 at the moment, dependant on Somerset farmer time
SUNDAY MEAL quiche, bread and salads. We have some gluten free rolls. It will start at 17:30-18:00 dependant on set up time ( same caterers as tonight) There is a 50/50 split of vegetarian/ham quiches. As carnivores also like vegetarian food, can the 30 vegetarians who opted for this on Friday, go through first. As with tonight please no seconds if there are any until the last person has gone through
CIDER TASTING There will be 6 ciders and 120 samples of 80ml each, so that means about 500ml (1 pint) It’s really hard to judge the numbers coming so can I ask that initially tandem teams share a taster and we’ll see where we go from there. There are 180 on the rally and usually about 2/3 attend these. There is 2.5kg of cheese so it’s all about tasting rather than munching, clues will be given and match the ciders. LED RIDE SUNDAY Sarah and I will lead this and it will be the SHORT. Combination of distance, heat and group dynamics. Early lunch at Glastonbury, afternoon stop at Somerton, try that cake you didn’t get at Alfredo’s. Start at 09:15 at the marquee

Cider they have small paper cups to reuse so no need for a glass
SUNDAY RIDES All head to Glastonbury with a climb over High Ham. Through Shapwick through the bird reserve, where the surface is good, please give way to walkers. Into Glastonbury. Lots of places to eat and drink, our favourite is the 100 monkeys up the High street on the right. The 3 routes diverge, the medium does a loop to Wells, the Bishops Palace is an atmospheric tea stop. The long heads to Castle Cary returning along the South Somerset Cycleway. All converge on Somerton for a final teastop. Plenty of places to visit. No pinch point cafes, nothing booked, just enjoy the final day.
WRAPPING UP. Thankyou to everyone for the tremendous gift on the last night. It will go on helping to upgrade the main computer and screen to which I’ve been glued, hopefully a little faster and all the APP’s will work again. Loads of people said Thankyou as well during the event, every one appreciated. The floored marquee, led rides, show us your tandem, jigsaws and the cider evening seemed to be highlights. However the food was fab, the barn dance band brilliant and having sole use of the campsite all worked. The club is extraordinarily lucky to have so many lovely people underscoring these events. Bernie for lugging the stuff about, Clem for games, Jackie and Stuart for the labels, Pat for badges, Terry for IT. We mustn’t forget Peter though for being a cracking chairman. - Getting There: Thorney Lakes Caravan & Camping Park, Thorney, Langport, TA10 0DW. Google Maps There is a road closure in Langport due to open again on the 3rd. Suggest LARGER VEHICLES TO THE SITE From wherever you come from go for this junction, don't go through the centre of Langport. Look for the A372, the turn is next to St Marys Church. Large lorries from ABP go this way. Best route avoiding Langport is the A303 and come off at Ash/Tintinhull, head through Ash, straight across the traffic lights at Stapleton Cross, through village of Coat, after Coat over river bridge turn right, (we are brown signed from Stapleton Cross!!) If anyone has problems they can always contact Sally who manages the campsite on 07803005042.

Booking in
This will be in the marquee and will open from 14:00 on the Monday and will be manned all day until 19:00
EVERYONE must book in please, including those staying off site before 19:00 on the Monday.
We have badges and also a laminated label for the back of the Tandem with your names and featuring the mice with the cheese logo. Crucially we need to check bookings for the Hog Roast and also if you are around on Sunday evening for the meal provided as we need to get the numbers correct.
Fire Risk
It's dry very dry. Whilst there is no legal reason to keep a 6 metre gap, common sense applies. No fires please or BBQ on the ground. Have water close by. I can probably get some fire extinguishers and if I do these will be located in key locations.

Neil is a qualified and registered first aider as is Eugene. On the campsite, if you need help and we are there, we can assist. On the road, 999/111 (for our foreign guests as much as anything)
Pitches
Electric - All have been allocated in advance as quite a few people are arriving early.
No Electric - There are several areas. All the families will be close together in one area
FIRE - No BBQ's or ground fires. A 6 metre rule does not apply to rallies, but tents should be pitched with distance between them. If too close, you may be asked to repitch.
Off Site Members
There are 18 people off site.
Preferably tandem to the site, however you can leave a car. If you do then close to reception is the best place. Better still if you have friends on site, then use their pitch.
Everyone who rides on the rally or attends must have booked for this rally
Campsite Facilities
2 fixed washrooms
1 portable shower unit with 4 showers. This is an additional facilitity
6 portaloos. Please can everyone bring a toilet roll. If you find one is running low, please restock it. This is an additional facilitity
Wash up area
NO washing machine
In the marquee, a fridge (probably two) will be available. These are primarily for non electric campers. Please be considerate with space, as others wish to use this.
The campsite reception, may be able to freeze ice blocks
The campsite has a very small shop, literally 3 shelves of the absolute basics.
Rubbish/Recycling
Two areas, by the fixed toilet blocks
Marquee and facilities within
Within the marquee, there will be 14 trestle tables and 84 folding chairs
The floor is matted (not that moisture will be an issue now)
Charging facilities - A place to charge phones and Garmin type devices. USB charging ports. For E-bikes there will be socket and we can accommodate a few but I would be grateful if you could bring a multi socket to save tying up the plugs. Overnight charging is OK but please away from the marquee material and anything combustible, however unlikely. Everything left at your own risk.

There should be a notice board, this is for up to date infornmation. If I remember this will be moved to the campsite exit each morning so that everyone can see it
The marquee is a fabulous place for campers to have breakfast, it's communal and you can bring a stove/trangia and chat to others over coffee. I use it as an extension to my tent, please join me.
Local Shops
The closet shop is at Kingsbury Episcopi, out of the campsite, go left for 3km, it's on the left. A good sized community shop https://www.kingsburycommunitycentre.co.uk/ For larger shops there is a supermarket (Tesco's) For this out of the campsite heading right , through Muchelney. At Huish Episcopi, at the T Junction, go right, past the church (LHS) then turn left at the T-Junction. After 1km, go left at the roundabout, after 600 metres it's on your right https://www.tesco.com/store-locator/langport/tesco-stores-ltd Local shops need our support, there is a bakery in Langport that's very good https://www.littlebakerylangport.co.uk/ Martock also has a bakery and a supermarket
Evening Events
Everything starts at 19:00, except Sunday night when food will start at 18:30 and the Tandem Games at 17:30
On Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, a very short briefing will start proceedings about the rides the next day. On Monday at the opening drink, it will be fitted in somewhere, probably at the introduction and welcome to everyone

Bar
There will be a bar in the marquee all week, wine, cider, beer etc run by the campsite managers children. It is separate to anything I am doing. A licence has been applied for and will be from approx 18:30 to 22:30. It’s a lovely gesture, please support it as it gets people in the marquee. Please be considerate when leaving in regards noise and bottles as some people are close to the marquee and appreciate a good nights sleep
Tandem Games
A regular favourite and Clem will be running these having for many years been Phil's apprentice. Water Pistols may be involved as various cunning schemes utilising a tandem are. It will be on a large flat space and will be obvious.
Show us your Tandem
This has worked brilliantly at the Cycle Touring festival. 10 minutes to talk and answer questions about your Tandem. How can you get luggage on it? Tyres/Splitting it/Electrification etc etc. There will be a sign up sheet when you check in and collect your badges. On Wednesday night starting at 19:30 in the marquee
Bring and Buy
An ideal chance to sell/give away those things you keep moving about the garage whilst thinking 'I'm sure someone would use that'
Cider and Cheese tasting
The West Country version of wine tasting, match the cider to the description. Please bring a pen.
Slide Show
West Country Cycleways. This was presentation that I did for the Cycle Touring festival a few years ago. The South West has a number of marked cycleways that are lovely rides, this presentation will be a journey highlighting a number of them.
Hog Roast
You must have booked this. You will have one last chance at booking in on Monday. Can everyone bring a plate and cutlery, it avoids disposable waste. Pork and stuffing on a burger or vegetarian (choice in advance) green salad with French Dressing, pesto pasta salad. Starts 18:30
The Velocio
A treasure hunt that will be in the spirit of how Velocio was intended, not a ride to follow, but one you have to plan, with questions in a 20km radius from the campsite that have different points values. There is no set route so it is up to you to plot a route to find as many as you can. For families and also for those who want a more relaxed day, I have done a walking hunt around 3 local towns, where there are 27,19 and 16 clues to find.
You can start in your own time (from the marquee) between 08:00 and 10:00, having 6.5 hours to capture as many questions as you can. If you return outside the 6.5 hours from departure, there will be lots of penalty points. 10 points for every 5 minutes.
In addition as you need a small break, there is an arranged and paid for tea stop at Alfredos in Somerton between 09:30 and 12:30, where tea or coffee and a pasty are offered. For this you get an additional 100 points and you will be signed in for this.
For families, there will be questions within a small area in local towns, that can also score for the main velocio
There will be a prize for the team that gets the most points in each of the 3 towns and there is a stunning trophy for the winner, which we'll present on the night. Remember there is a bar open so it should make for a lovely day.
You will need
- Access to rides on a smartphone, the icons will be there, programmed to appear before 08:00
- However each clue will have a map reference, maps required. Landranger 182, 183 and 193
- A pen
In the evening in the marquee ay 19:00, Neil will go through all the questions and the trophy will be awarded. The questions are highly specific and I have photos of nearly every clue, the judges decision is final.
Tea Stops
I do not warn cafes that you are coming, it is just too difficult as I have no control as to when you arrive and if I do book and only one Tandem attends, I get a cross owner (yes it has happened) It is rarely an issue as we turn up gradually, not en masse, be patient, it’s a holiday. In the days before, I will check openings and appraise the likely popular ones. Basically turn up, if room then great, if not then wait awhile or move on. Personally I love a tearoom as a chance to meet other tandems.
Organised Meals
There will be two of these
Thursday - Velocio. A tea/coffee stop at Alfredo's in Somerton between 09:30 and 12:30. A room inside has been reserved (seats about 30) and there is some outdoor seating. Tea and coffee, from a dispenser, not the machine and a pastry. Refills are OK. Disposable cups will be used simply because of the time pressure. This is part of velocio and points are offered. If you are a family, there are 27 clues close by, so you can relax whilst others hunt out the clues.
Sunday - At 18:30 an external caterer will be serving Quiche Lorain and a vegetarian Mediterranean quiche. In addition there will be cheese, bread, coleslaw, cherry tomatoes,cucumber, pickled onions and branston pickle. For those that are Gluten sensitive, gluten free rolls will be accessed.
Can everyone bring a plate and cutlery, it avoids disposable waste. For this please bring a chair and table, we can move tables from the marquee, but not room for everyone.

The primary is the tcn2026 group via the TC News WebApp and email. There is also a Whats App group but this is not the primary source of information. Everything important is on tcn2026, the Tandem Club website and rides is an amazing resource for events, please use it.

Photos
We can collate pictures, volunteer please. We have setup the TC2026 gallery at: https://tandem-club.org.uk/showcase?cmd=view&group=&id=164. If you add photos there they will be on the website and shown randomly in the future and also linked to this event for future generations. Please name them and say the route you did. There is the facility to do this. They can also be added to trides for the ride you are doing, there are 6 pictures per ride, a great historical resource.
Roads Surfaces and Dangers
All the routes are majority tarmac. The River Parrett Cycleway which isn’t actually on the routes is the a rough section. The path through the bird reserve near Glastonbury is a little bumpy and has pedestrians, they take preference. When in groups, please 6 tandems together then leave at least 20 metres to allow cars to pass safely, please tandem with consideration. As far as I am aware there are no road closures, if I find one, I’ll announce it, likewise if you find one please share on the messaging service. The Parrot Trail is a 2 mile section near Langport that is a track. Major roads will be avoided, but there will be traffic on the roads, but a real effort is made to use quiet roads. There is one difficult road to cross on the Wednesday Medium ride where you cross the A358 https://tandem-club.org.uk/rides?cmd=view&id=1907 The sight lines are good, but it's a fast road. It is marked on rides with a red caution icon.
Organisers
Neil Wheadon, ably helped by the West Country Group, will be organising this event. Having organised many nationals, internationals and Easter events in the past,we are very experienced in running these events.
Routes and Places of Interest Viewable and Downloadable
For those that have not yet attended a Tandem Club rally, we do not go out as a large group. Instead we tend to set off in small groups, so that we do not swamp the local roads. Each rally attendee is expected to bring their own printed copy of the route instructions and.or to have downloaded the gpx track files to their device. The following is the list of rides with maps showing the ride with statistics and places of interest on the routes. Only those booked for the event and logged into the website will be able to access these.
| Tuesday | All the rides head out the same way and return the same way. Each ride has been ridden and checked over the winter in 2025 and detailed route sheets and pictures to give you a flavour of the route enclosed. If you can do the long ride and have time to visit Cadbury Castle (a 40 minute way there and back), it's a worthwhile thing to do. |
| Tuesday Family | This is 25 miles long and includes the National Trust proprties of Tintinhull and Montecute. There is quite a hill out of Montecute, you could cycle to Montecute, have a look around then reverse it to Tintinhull, that would work. |
| Wednesday | These head west. For the medium and Long please go prepared as the western parts are poorly served with pubs/cafes. The long is quite a ride to Wellington. If you have time go and look at the monument, but the view isn't as good as you'd think, better the layby a mile before. The caisson lift which I've highlighted is in my opinion is quite something. |
| Thursday | Velocio day. It's a test of map reading and route planning. The format will return to the one that Stephen Dee did in Stratford. There are multiple clues in several directions each has a value and all you have to do is cycle to whichever you think will get you the most points. For families, I have done clues in the closest towns, designed for you to cycle there and walk around in a limited area to find the answers. As a twist, 100 points will be awarded for stopping at a tearoom and having a piece of cake or an ice cream. It's a fun event. In the evening, we'll mark the entries together in the marquee as I have pictures of each clue. There is a grand trophy as soon as I locate it. |
| Friday | Rest day if you want! |
| Saturday | Heading south. The family/short ride goes through Martock and Stoke Sub Hamdon and onto Barrington Court. Some good places to eat and drink, including The Feed Station at Merriot that was CyclingUK's cafe of the year a few years ago. The medium ride extends to the lovely rail trail from Chard to Ilminster. After Ilminster through Dillington Park and back via Barrington Court. The long takes you further south. If you have time, you can visit Forde Abbey. I stopped at the delightful Thorncombe Village shop that serves a good cup of tea, a community shop seemingly in the middle of nowhere. |
| Sunday | Last day and it has to be Glastonbury. There is no sensible way to shorten the short for a family, but it could be reversed to go back, but there will be a climb as on the way out, it is shorter than the short if you do that. The medium takes in Wells, well worth a look, to get in the mood watch the film 'Hot Fuzz' and mind them swans. The long ride heads to Castle Cary. Personally I liked this ride when I test rode it (as with all the routes) a few months ago. The countryside around Castle Cary is different to the levels. |
